European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
