Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
