Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.
Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical binders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
